On 29 March, you will receive a letter on the Secure Data Portal outlining your 1 April 2023 estimated funding instalment for the 2019–2022 non-teacher pay equity settlements and collective agreements. 

The newly signed Librarians and Library Assistants’, and Science Technicians’ Pay Equity Claim settlements will be funded in the July 2023 quarterly funding instalment.

The Accord between the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua included a commitment to review how schools are resourced for teacher aides.

The sector reference group leading the review started this work in March 2021 and submitted their proposal to the Accord Governance Group in July 2022.

In December 2022 we opened consultation on the sector reference group’s proposal. This remains open until 6 April.

The group will reconvene following consultation to consider the submissions and what changes should be made to the proposal. Following this, a final proposal will be presented to the Accord Governance Group, before being considered by Ministers.

Note, this proposal focuses on English-medium education settings. We engage separately with Kaupapa Māori peak bodies and stakeholders to strengthen and grow Kaupapa Māori education settings, kura and pathways.

Changes to how schools and kura plan and report came into effect on 1 January 2023.

There are transitional arrangements in place until new regulations take effect from mid-2023, and ahead of schools and kura having their first strategic plans in place by 1 January 2024. You can find more information on:

From 13 March to 6 April we will be consulting on an exposure draft of the Regulations, which provides the detailed requirements for key school planning and reporting documents. We will also be engaging with schools, whānau and communities to help further develop material to support schools and communities with the changes.

COVID-19-related Learning Recognition Credits are not expected to be required for ākonga in 2023 because it is anticipated you will be able to address the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 through flexibility built into NCEA and your usual processes for managing disruption.

With NZQA , we will monitor the situation through the year and reconsider our approach should the environment change.

We have a resource, which is aligned to the materials being used by the psychosocial national response and may be useful for you and your staff supporting tamariki impacted by severe weather events.

• Guidance on supporting tamariki, which is positioned for any adult (teacher or whānau) to use.
  • The focus is on responding to a range of worries and questions, now and in the immediate future.
  • There is a section left blank for you to add local information on supports available in your area.

On 20 March the Independent Children’s Monitor will be holding a hui for you to share your experiences of supporting tamariki and rangatahi, whānau, and caregivers under the care of Oranga Tamariki. It may be of particular interest to (but not limited to) principals, RTLB, SENCO, centre mangers, and LSC.
