NEW: Long-term approach to managing COVID-19

Today, the Government has announced that Aotearoa New Zealand will move to a new long-term approach to managing COVID-19.

From 11.59pm tonight (Monday 12 September):

  • The COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic lights) is no longer in effect.
  • All remaining worker vaccination mandates have been removed.
  • Masks continue to be required in health settings, but are no longer required on public transport or in any other settings. Masks will no longer be required or recommended in tertiary education settings however they can continue to be worn by those who feel more comfortable doing so.
  • Confirmed COVID-19 cases are still legally required to self-isolate for 7 days. Anyone who is symptomatic is encouraged to stay home and get tested.
  • Household contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases are no longer required to self-isolate, but are asked to test for COVID-19 for the first 5 days of the case’s isolation period, and to wear a mask when out and about.
  • Vaccination and post-arrival testing are not required at the border. Arriving passengers are encouraged to test on days 0/1 and 5/6.

This means that tertiary education providers can operate as normal but may choose to implement public health measures to help minimise the risk of transmission if a risk assessment determines that it is appropriate to do so.

Updated webpages – Advice for tertiary providers and students

We are updating our advice for tertiary providers and students on the Te Mahau COVID-19 website. The updated pages will include information on risk assessments and planning, and links to the Tertiary and International COVID-19 Bulletins:

If you want to refer to any earlier guidance from the old COVID-19 Protection Framework that we have removed from the Te Mahau COVID-19 website (for example the Public Health Toolkit for Tertiary Providers, or the Guide for managing self-isolation in tertiary student accommodation), you may a request a copy by emailing the COVID-19 Tertiary and International mailbox:

However, please note that any earlier guidance requested by email will not have been updated to reflect the long-term approach to managing COVID-19. We recommend that you refer to our updated Te Mahau COVID-19 webpages in the first instance.
